Risiko Keamanan Senjata 3-D Printing

Sistem senjata berbasis 3-D printing mengancam keamanan setiap orang, negara dan dunia. Karena kemajuan 3D printing menawarkan terobosan cabang-cabang prosthetik atau bagian-bagian mesin jet dan jual-beli sistem senjata tanpa kontrol dari Pemerintah atau Negara. Misalnya, teknologi 3D printing dipakai oleh hacker yang memasukan instruksi atau algoritma ke bagian-bagian penting pesawat-pesawat terbang. Begitu hasil kajian RAND Corporation, lembaga riset nirlaba di Amerika Serikat,  yang dirilis Mei 2018 dengan judul : Additive Manufacturing in 2040 : Powerful Enabler, Disruptive Threat (RAND Corp., 8/5/2018).

“Lone-wolf attacks may become more lethal when individuals have ready access to 3D printers. Even in countries like the United States, where gun control laws have done little to restrict access to semi-automatic weapons, additive manufacturing could increase the risk of violence and murder,” ungkap Trevor Johnston, PhD, ketua tim riset RAND (RAND Corporation. “3-D printing of weapons threatens security on global, national and personal level.” ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 8/5/2018).

Kini industri penerbangan seperti Boeing dan Airbus inkorporasi dengan teknologi 3-D printing ke dalam penerbangan komersial (Alwyn Scott/Reuters, 11/4/2017). Matthew Meselson, Ketua Harvard Sussex Program on Chemical and Biological Warfare Armament and Arms Limitation di Amerika Serikat, menyatakan : “Every major technology—metallurgy, explosives, internal combustion, aviation, electronics, nuclear energy—has been intensively exploited not only for peaceful purposes but also for hostile ones.’’ (Meselson, 2000).

Menurut kajian ahli RAND Corp (2018), desentralisasi manufaktur level perorangan dan perusahan membuka peluang produksi teknologi 3D printing tanpa pasokan bahan impor. Risiko keamanan dapat berasal dari kondisi ini. “Unemployment, isolation and alienation of middle and low-skilled laborers may be exacerbated by additive manufacturing, potentially leading to societal unrest in both developed and developing countries. The potential security implications of large masses of unemployed, disconnected people are substantial,” ungkap Prof. Troy D. Smith, anggota tim riset RAND Corporation (Science Daily, 8/5/2018).
