Jejak-Karbon Dari Pilihan Jenis Makanan

Masyarakat memilih jenis pangan dengan jejak karbon (carbon-footprint)—emisi gas rumah kaca dan konsumsi energi—yang rendah, jika label makanan berisi informasi tentang jejak-karbon tiap jenis pangan. Begitu hasil riset dan kajian Dr Adrian R. Camilleri, Richard P. Larrick, Shajuti Hossain, Dalia Patino-Echeverr dari University of Technology Sydney dan Duke University (University of Technology Sydney, 17/12/2018).

Tim peneliti mewawancara 1.000 orang tentang 19 jenis pangan dan 18 peralatan listrik serta hubungannya dengan emisi gas rumah-kaca di Australia. Hasilnya, partisipan mengabaikan konsumsi energi dan emisi gas rumah-kaca dari peralatan listrik dan pangan. Tim peneliti juga menanyakan 120 partisipan tentang pilihan sup. Hasilnya, partisipan lebih sedikit membeli sup sapi--label berisi info jejak-karbon--dan lebih banyak sup sayur.

Hasil riset ini dirilis oleh Nature Climate Change edisi Desember 2018 (Adrian R. Camilleri, Richard P. Larrick, Shajuti Hossain, Dalia Patino-Echeverri. “Consumers underestimate the emissions associated with food but are aided by labels.” Nature Climate Change, 2018).

“If you ask people to guess the difference between items such as beef and vegetable soup on the environment they assume there is not much difference, but beef soup creates more than 10 times the amount of greenhouse gases than vegetable soup. This is a bit of a blind spot because if someone wants to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, they might think to turn off the heater, drive less or fly less. Very few people think to eat less beef,” ujar Dr Adrian R. Camilleri, ketua tim riset (University of Technology Sydney, 17/12/2018).

Emisi gas rumah kaca terutama berasal dari produksi sapi dan domba serta produksi fertilizer pakan, methane dari hewan-hewan itu, transportasi ternak, dan perluasan lahan ternak. Buah, sayur, dan biji-bijian kurang memicu emisi gas rumah-kaca; ayam dan ikan memicu dampak sedang. “The choices we make at the dinner table can have a significant impact on global challenges such as climate change, and our research shows consumers are keen to make that choice,” papar Dr Camilleri (Science Daily, 17/12/2018).
