Soundscapes Hutan Tropis Negara RI & Kaltim

Kini rekaman bentangan bunyi (soundscapes) hutan tropis pra dan pasca penebangan selektif (selective logging) di Negara RI, khususnya, hutan tropis Kalimantan Timur menyingkap keragaman-hayati dan memantau program pelestarian hutan. Bio-akustik (bioacoustics), perekaman dan analisis bentang bunyi hutan tropis, adalah sarana efektif pantau pelestarian keragaman-fauna hutan tropis (Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, 3/1/2019; Zuzana Burivalova/The Nature Conservancy, 3/1/2019).

Begitu hasil riset dan kajian Zuzana Burivalova dari Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (Princeton University) di Amerika Serikat dan Edward T. Game dari Nature Conservancy dan School of Biological Sciences (University of Queensland) di Australia serta Rhett A. Butler dari Mongabay.com (Menlo Park, Amerika Serikat), yang dirilis oleh jurnal Science (Zuzana Burivalova, Edward T. Game, Rhett A. Butler, “The sound of a tropical forest”,  Science, January 4, 2019: Vol. 363, Issue 6422, pp. 28-29).

Bio-akustik bentangan rekaman aktivitas manusia dan fauna (on-the-fly analysis), relatif lebih mudah dan murah serta menghasilkan pantauan efektif program pelestarian hutan. Hasilnya ialah kumpulan data ekologis ilmiah dalam waktu singkat untuk rekomendasi kebijakan dan pantauan pelestarian hutan-hutan (Shreya Dasgupta/Mongabay Series, 3/1/2019). “Non governmental organizations and the conservation community need to be able to truly evaluate the effectiveness of conservation interventions. It's in the interest of certification bodies to harness the developments in bioacoustics for better enforcement and effective measurements," ungkap Zuzana Burivalova, Ph.D.

Imej satelit dapat mengukur deforestasi, namun sering gagal memantau degradasi ekologis seperti overhunting, kebakaran, atau invasi spesies eksotik. Survei lapangan sering mahal, lama, dan hanya mencakup lahan terbatas.  “Beyond measuring the effectiveness of conservation projects and monitoring compliance with forest protection commitments, networked bioacoustic monitoring systems could also generate a wealth of data for the scientific community,” ungkap Rhett Butler, co-author karya ilmiah ini (Princeton University, 3/1/2019).
