Teknik Cepat-Tepat Deteksi Radiasi

Ahli nuklir di North Carolina State University (NC State), Amerika Serikat, mengembangkan teknik baru deteksi radiasi dalam waktu sejam, yang menggunakan material insulator elektronik modern. Teknik ini berbasis pengujian insulator kristal (crystalline insulators), mulai dari gerakan ibu jari (thumb drives) hingga HP (smarphone) dengan hasil akurat, tepat, dan cepat – teknik lama berminggu-minggu. Hasil riset itu dirilis oleh jurnal Radiation Measurements (Robert B. Hayes and Ryan P. O’Mara, “Retrospective dosimetry at the natural background level with commercial surface mount resistors”, Radiation Measurements,  Dec. 11, 2018).

Teknik baru ini dapat membantu deteksi radiasi dengan risiko sindrom radiasi akut.  “If there is a large radiological event in a populated area, it would be difficult or impossible to treat everyone who could potentially have acute radiation syndrome. You'd need to be able to figure out who was exposed to enough radiation to require treatment,” ungkap Associate  Professor Robert Hayes, ahli nuklir pada NC State, dan penulis utama karya ilmiah ini (North Carolina State University, 9/1/2019).

Riset itu disponsor oleh Nuclear Regulatory Commission,  Consortium for Nonproliferation Enabling Capabilitie (NC State), dan Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation R&D of the National Nuclear Security Administration di Amerika Serikat. Associate Professor Robert Hayes merinci manfaat teknik baru deteksi radiasi ini. “Given that health providers have a one- to two-week window to start treating victims of acute radiation syndrome, the technique should be sufficient to identify which patients require the necessary care. It could not only identify individual cases of acute radiation syndrome, but also help authorities determine which geographic areas received the most radiation. For example, our technique might have been useful in a place like Fukushima, for putting people's minds at ease. It's like having your own personal radiation detector.”  (Robert Hayes & Mattshipman, 9/1/2019).

Namun, teknik baru ini membutuhkan alat khusus dan keahlian. "This technique requires specialized equipment and expertise, so it's not something most locales would have on hand," papar Ass. Professor Robert Hayes (North Carolina State University, 9/1/2019).
