Energi Gelombang Laut Meningkat Skala Global

Energi-energi gelombang laut yang dipengaruhi oleh pemanasan laut, meningkat di seluruh dunia. Tren dan proyeksi skala global menunjukan sidik (fingerprint) perubahan iklim, kenaikan level permukaan laut dan suhu global, menyusut es laut, kenaikan kecepatan angin serta tinggi gelombang laut di lautan. Begitu hasil riset tim ahli University of California - Santa Cruz di Amerika Serikat dan Environmental Hydraulics Institute, University of Cantabria di Spanyol, yang dirilis oleh jurnal Nature Communications (Borja G. Reguero, Iñigo J. Losada and Fernando J. Méndez, “A recent increase in global wave power as a consequence of oceanic warming”, Nature Communications volume 10, Article number: 205 (2019).

“For the first time, we have identified a global signal of the effect of global warming in wave climate. In fact, wave power has increased globally by 0.4 percent per year since 1948, and this increase is correlated with the increasing sea-surface temperatures, both globally and by ocean regions,” ungkap Borja Gonzalez Reguero, PhD, peneliti pada Institute of Marine Sciences, University of California, Santa Cruz dan penulis utama karya ilmiah ini (Charlos Nieto, IH Cantabria/UC Santa Cruz, 14/1/2019).

Fokus studi ilmiah itu ialah kandungan energi gelombang-gelombang laut yang terkirim dari angin dan berubah ke dalam gerak-gelombang. Metrik atau kekuatan glombang (wave power) meningkat akibat tren kenaikan suhu permukaan laut yang mempengaruhi pola angin skala global dan memicu kenaikan energi gelombang laut. “This study shows that the global wave power can be a potentially valuable indicator of global warming, similarly to carbon dioxide concentration, the global sea level rise, or the global surface atmospheric temperature,” papar Profesor Iñigo J. Losada, Direktur Riset pada Environmental Hydraulics Institute, University of Cantabria (IHCantabria) (University of California - Santa Cruz, 14/1/2019).

Hasil riset ini juga memetakan risiko masyarakat pantai. “Our results indicate that risk analysis neglecting the changes in wave power and having sea level rise as the only driver may underestimate the consequences of climate change and result in insufficient or maladaptation,” ungkap co-author Fernando J. Méndez dari University of Cantabria.
