400 Bakteri Mikroplastik di Pantai Singapura

Tim peneliti kelautan dari National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapura, menemukan bermacam-macam bakteri mikroplastik beracun, selain organisme-organisme yang dapat mengurangi polutan laut seperti hidrokarbon, pada sampah plastik sekitar pantai Singapura. Begitu hasil riset Dr. Sandric Leong, Senior Research Fellow pada NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) dan Emily Curren, mahasiswi doktoral TMSI dan Department of Biological Sciences pada NUS Faculty of Science, Singapura, yang dirilis oleh jurnal Science of the Total Environment edisi 17 November 2018.

Selama April-Juli 2018, tim peneliti meriset dan mengkaji 275 potongan mikroplastik dari pantai Lazarus Island, Sembawang Beach, da Changi Beach di Singapura. Dengan teknik-teknik pengurutan khusus, tim itu menemukan lebih dari 400 jenis bakteri dalam 275 potongan mikroplastik itu (National University of Singapore (NUS), 11/2/2019).

“Microplastics form a large proportion of plastic pollution in marine environments. Marine organisms may consume bits of microplastics unintentionally, and this could lead to the accumulation and subsequent transfer of marine pathogens in the food chain. Hence, understanding the distribution of microplastics and identifying the organisms attached to them are crucial steps in managing the plastic pollution on a national and global scale,” papar Dr. Sandric Leong, ketua tim peneliti itu dan Senior Research Fellow pada NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), Singapura.

Potongan-potongan plastik kecil itu dapat menumpuk dan masuk ke mata-rantai pangan manusia, ketika mikroplastik itu dicerna oleh organisme laut. Saat ini lebih dari 150 juta ton plastik masuk ke laut atau lautan di seluruh dunia. Mikroplastik memicu risiko karena banyak organisme laut misalnya udang, kerang, dan ikan ‘menelan’ plastik-plastik ukuran mikro itu seperti pangan. Apalagi, mikroplastik di laut membutuhkan waktu degradasi lebih lama karena air laut dan suhu lebih rendah laut atau lautan. Akibatnya, sampah plastik menjadi lingkungan habitat koloni biota laut, termasuk laut tropis (National University of Singapore, 11/2/2019).

“Given the predicted increase in plastic waste contamination in oceans, the discovery of such bacteria provides important nature-friendly alternatives for the mitigation of plastic pollution and toxic pollutants such as hydrocarbons. As the microplastics we studied were collected from locations easily accessible to the public and in areas widely used for recreation, the identification of potentially pathogenic bacteria would be important in preventing the spread of diseases,” ungkap Emily Curren (NUS, 11/2/2019).
