Polimer Baru Atasi Polusi PFAS

Mahasiswa doktoral Nicholas A. Lundquist dan koleganya (2019) asal Flinders University Institute for NanoScale Science and Technology di Australia, menemukan satu jenis baru polimer penyerap, terbuat dari minyak jelantah dan belerang dan bubuk karbon aktif (powdered activated carbon/PAC). Polimer baru ini dapat membersihkan polusi zat alkil polifluorinasi beracun (toxic polyfluorinated alkyl substances /PFAS) yang murah, aman, ramah-lingkungan dan dapat menghilangkan PFAS dari air (Nicholas A. Lundquist, et al, 2019).

“We need safe, low-cost and versatile methods for removing PFAS from water, and our polymer-carbon blend is a promising step in this direction. The next stage for us is to test this sorbent on a commercial scale and demonstrate its ability to purify thousands of litres of water. We are also investigating methods to recycle the sorbent and destroy the PFAS,” ungkap Dr Justin Chalker, co-director studi ilmiah ini, asal Flinders University di Australia (Flinders University, 5/6/2019).

Di Amerika Serikat (AS), tes Food and Drug Administration (FDA) telah memantau kontaminasi PFAS--dilabel “forever chemicals”--telah terlacak dalam makanan, daging toko kelontong dan makanan laut. Sedangkan di Australia, polusi PFAS tidak mudah terurai di lingkungan. Misalnya, penggunaan busa pemadam kebakaran yang
mengandung PFAS di bandara dan lokasi pertahanan, yang mengakibatkan air tanah dan permukaan terkontaminasi (Science Daily, 5/6/2019).
