‘Model Palu’: Pertahanan Alamiah Atasi Tsunami & Gelombang Laut

Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger dkk (2019) asal Universitas Göttingen (Jerman) memimpin riset kolaborasi ahli asal Negara RI, Australia, Jerman, Singapura dan Tiongkok tentang model pertahanan alamiah terhadap risiko gelombang laut dan tsunami di Palu, Negara RI. Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger dkk (2019) menjadikan kota Palu sebagai studi kasus pertahanan alamiah keragaman-hayati pantai dan masyarakatnya terhadap risiko gelombang laut dan tsunami.

“If the international research community can monitor such a hybrid 'ecosystem-based and engineered' approach in Palu, the 'Palu Model' could become an important learning opportunity for other high risk coastal hazard sites in tropical biodiversity hotspots,” ungkap Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger. Sejak tahun 2018, Pemerintah RI menyusun rencana perlindungan pantai di Palu. Hasil riset dan kajian Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger dkk (2019) terhadap studi kasus Kota Palu menemukan bahwa perlindungan berbasis ekologis (ekosistem) dapat meredam risiko gelombang laut dan tsunami terhadap zona pantai tropis dan masyarakatnya.

Akhir-akhir ini, masyarakat-masyarakat pesisir rentan terhadap risiko akibat gelombang badai dan tsunami. Korban tewas akibat tsunami selama satu abad terakhir di seluruh dunia berkisar 260.000 jiwa. Hasil riset dan kajian Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger dkk (2019) mengusulkan pertahanan atau perlindungan alamiah misalnya bakau dan terumbu karang terhadap risiko gelombang laut dan tsunami.

Thomas Cherico Wanger dkk (2019) membandingkan efek perlindungan buatan manusia dan pembangunan hibrida—termasuk hutan bakau dan terumbu karang – dalam upaya perlindungan zona pantai dan masyarakatnya khususnya hotspot keragaman-hayati tropis misalnya Palu di Negara RI.

“In the future, ecosystem-based protection should form the basis to plan a coastal protection strategy. Improving this strategy through man-made and engineered solutions may make the entire endeavour more cost-efficient and may better protect valuable coastal biodiversity and related ecosystem services,” papar Dr. Thomas Cherico Wanger.
